What to consider when buying in Bovenhoek

Pros:

• Train station Hengelo is on the Amsterdam–Cologne line; direct trains to Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Germany without changes
• Bovenhoek sits above the city centre, so you're not in the noise of Gasthuisplein and the main shopping streets but still within walking distance
• Housing stock is mixed: older workers' cottages, post-war family homes, and newer infill; cheaper entry price than the Dutch randstad
• Proximity to open countryside east of town; you can cycle out of the urban area within 10 minutes

Cons:

• Hengelo's economy relies heavily on industry; the town lacks the cultural draw and job diversity of bigger cities
• Bovenhoek itself has few shops or cafés; the useful ones (supermarket, baker, pharmacy) are down the slope toward the centre
• Weekend foot traffic is thin; if you want a buzzing local scene with regular events, you won't find it here
• Employment for skilled workers outside manufacturing and logistics is limited; most people commute to Arnhem, Eindhoven, or Germany
